แอทซาซ ฮัสเซน มิดฟิลด์วัย 17 ปี ย้ายกลับไปสโมสรเดิมของเค้า ทีมวาลาเรนกก้าในนอร์เวย์ ด้วยค่าตัวไม่เปิดเผย

ดาวรุ่งจากกรุงออสโลอยู่ระหว่าฤดูกาลที่สองกับทีม หลังจากย้ายมาร่วมอคาเดมี่ตั้งแต่กรกฎา 2009 ก่อนจะเซ็นสัญญาอาชีพในเดือนมกรา 2010

ในฤดูกาลแรก เค้าลงเล่นให้ทีมเยาวชนไป 17 นัด ยิงไป 3 ประตู และยังขยับไปเล่นให้ทีมสำรองอีกสองนัดด้วยกัน

ในฤดูกาลนี้ กองกลางที่จะอายุครบ 18 ในเดือนมกรานี้ ลงสนามเป็นนตัวจริงให้ทีมเยาวชนไป 7 นัด และลงเป็นตัวสำรองหนึ่งนัดให้ทีมสำรอง

เมื่อวันเสาร์ที่ 8 พฤศจิกายนที่ผ่านมา ทีมเยาวชนของแมนยูจัดการสอยเด็กโบลตันซะห้าลูกที่แคร์ริงตัน โดยดาวรุ่งชาวฝรั่งเศสที่เพิ่งตกเป็นข่าวอย่าง พอล ปอกบา ก็ประเดิมประตูแรกในสีเสื้อปีศาจแดงได้แล้วด้วย รวมทั้งฟอร์มอันน่าประทับใจของ เดวิด เปตรุซซี่ กองหน้าดาวรุ่งชาวอิตาลีที่เพิ่งได้กลับมาลงสนามเป็นนัดแรกนับตั้งแต่เดือนกุมภาพันธ์

ทีมปีศาจน้อยรัวยิงสี่ประตูรวดในครึ่งเวลาหลัง ผู้เล่นโดดเด่นในเกมนี้ได้แก่ วิล คีน กองหน้าดาวรุ่ง (ไม่ได้เป็นอะไรกับรอย คีนนะ) ที่ยิงไปหนึ่ง และจ่ายให้เพื่อนทำประตูได้อีกสอง

เกมในช่วงแรกนั้นทั้งสองทีมผลัดกันรุกผลัดกันรับได้อย่างสนุก แต่เป็นแมนยูที่เป็นฝ่ายขึ้นนำไปก่อน 1-0 ในนาทีที่ 28 จอห์น โคฟี่ (กองหน้า)ลุยฝ่ากองหลังโบลตันหลุดเข้าไปได้ แม้ว่าเค้าจะถูกรวบในจังหวะแตะหนีนายประตู แต่ วิล คีน ก็จัดการบอลที่มาเข้าทางเข้าไปง่ายๆให้ทีมขึ้นนำ

เกมหลังจากนั้นก็ดูเนือยๆลงไป แม้จะมีจังหวะเดือดนิดหน่อยเมื่อ นิกกี้ อาโชส (Ajose อ่านงี้ไปก่อนแล้วกันนะ - กองหน้า) ไปทำฟาล์ว แต่กรรมการไม่เป่าเป็นจุดโทษ ทำให้ฝั่งโบลตันไม่พอใจ ผลครึ่งแรกเป็นปีศาจแดงยังนำอยู่ 1-0

ครึ่งหลัง ราเวล มอร์ริสัน (กองกลาง) เปลี่ยนตัวลงมาแทนโคฟี่ เกมในครึ่งหลังเป็นแมนยูที่เป็นฝ่ายกดดันทีมเยือน มอร์ริสันที่เพิ่งเปลี่ยนตัวลงมากับ เปตรุซซี่ ต่างก็มีโอกาสกันนิดหน่อยในช่วงต้น

และก็เป็นมอร์ริสันที่เป็นคนยิงประตู 2-0 ในกับแมนยู จากการทำทางอย่างสุดสวยของคีน บอลมาถึงเท้ามอร์ริสันก่อนจะจัดการสังหารอย่างเยือกเย็นเป็นประตูที่สองในเกมหลังจากครึ่งหลังเริ่มไปได้เจ็ดนาที

อีกสิบนาทีต่อมาสกอร์ก็ไหลเป็น 3-0 อาโชส พาบอลลุยมาได้ดีทางฝั่งซ้าย ก่อนจะตบบอลกลับหลังให้ ไรอัน ตุนนิคลิฟ (กองกลาง) ซัดฮาล์ฟวอลเล่ย์เข้าไปสวยงาม

เปตรุซซี่ ถูกเปลี่ยนตัวออกในนาทีที่ 69 เค้าไม่ได้ลงสนามนานถึงแปดเดือน และการกลับมาเกมนี้ก็ถือว่าอยู่ในฟอร์มที่น่าพอใจมากเลยทีเดียว

และก็เป็นตัวสำรองอีกแล้ว ลาร์เนล โคล (กองกลาง) ที่เพิ่งลงมาแทนเปตรุซซี่เมื่อกี้ ก็เปลี่ยนสกอร์เป็น 4-0 คีนเป็นคนทำทางให้อีกครั้งนึง

โบลตันได้ประตูไล่มาห่างเป็น 4-1 แต่แมนยูก็มาได้ประตูปิดกล่องเป็น 5-1 เมื่อ เซกี้ ฟรายเออร์ (แบ๊คซ้าย) ถูกทำฟาล์วในเขตโทษ ป็อกบาขอรับหน้าที่สังหารและก็เป็นประตูแรกของเค้าในเกม U18

จบเกมแมนยูถล่มโบลตัน 5-1 เก็บชัยชนะได้สวยงามอีกหนึ่งนัด

United’s reserves have retained the Lancashire Senior Cup after Kiko Macheda’s winner four minutes from time settled a tense, closely-contested final at the County Ground in Leyland this evening.

With the game seemingly destined for penalties, the Reds’ Italian striker rose highest to meet Magnus Eikrem’s right-wing freekick and crash a great header against the crossbar before reacting quickest and nodding home the rebound in predatory fashion.

Loan Update – 15-17 August

A first, and admittedly brief, update on the progress of those United youngsters playing their football out on loan this season.

Brief because, as things stand, only six players have been loaned out, and also because only two of those six were in action this past weekend. Danny Drinkwater made his debut for Huddersfield as a 72nd minute substitute in their 3-1 win over Southampton at the Galpharm Stadium, while summer signing Mame Biram Diouf – who is staying at Molde FK in Norway on loan until January – was unable to prevent his side losing 2-1 away to Viking Stavanger and missing out on the chance to close the gap on Tippeligaen leaders Rosenborg.

As for the other four, Tom Heaton was an unused substitute for QPR in their draw against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park, while Danny Simpson’s loan move was seemingly finalised too late for him to be included in the squad for Newcastle’s impressive 3-0 home win against Reading. Rodrigo Possebon was a surprising omission from the Sporting Braga squad for their season opening 1-0 win over Academica Coimbra after featuring regularly in the side during pre-season, while Adem Ljajić’s Partizan Belgrade don’t get their defence of the Serbian Superliga title underway until next weekend.

Cleverley makes Hornets switch

United midfielder Tom Cleverley has joined the recent loan exodus from Old Trafford and signed for Championship side Watford until January, following Tom Heaton, Danny Simpson and Danny Drinkwater out of the door in recent days.

20 last week, Cleverley has made remarkable progress in the last couple of years. After signing trainee forms in 2005, injuries seriously hampered his first two seasons and limited him to just 25 appearances for the Under-18s in that time. At this point in 2007, there were major doubts over whether the versatile youngster had an immediate future with the club, let alone a long-term one.

United’s coaches clearly saw something there with Tom and kept faith, and 07/08 was a real breakthrough season. Previously most often used at full-back, a regular move into midfield provided a better stage on which to display his ability and he finished the season as one of the three nominees for Reserve Player of the Year, only narrowly losing out to Richard Eckersley.

An impressive (and prolific) start to pre-season with the second string last year prompted Sir Alex to summon Cleverley to South Africa for the latter stages of United’s tour of South Africa, an opportunity that the youngster grasped emphatically with a goalscoring first team debut against Kaizer Chiefs in Pretoria. With that form being carried into the reserves season, Leicester came calling in January, taking Tom on loan until the end of the season. Although that campaign was to ultimately be ended prematurely by a shoulder injury, he had already made a big impression as part of the Foxes’ league-winning side, appearing in 15 games and scoring twice.

The Basingstoke-born starlet has continued to add to his burgeoning reputation this pre-season, with another first-team goal in the friendly against Valencia (this time in front of the Stretford End) being followed by a brace on debut for England U20s against Montenegro last week. Sir Alex revealed after that Valencia game that he’d recieved several enquiries about the 20 year-old’s availability on loan, and Watford boss Malky Mackay has won the race to secure Cleverley’s services, initially until January. Tom will wear the number 20 for the Hornets, and will team up with England U20 colleague Ross Jenkins at Vicarage Road.

Heaton joins the Hoops

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton is the latest United youngster to leave the club on loan this summer, having put pen to paper on a three-month loan deal with Queens Park Rangers of the Championship.

Heaton, 23, was expected by many to leave Old Trafford this summer in search of first-team football, but the England U21 stopper has been first-choice for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side throughout pre-season. With the close of the transfer window rapidly approaching and no desirable move lined up, Heaton has seemingly (and perhaps understandably) chosen another loan spell over the prospect of reserve league football for the next few months.

That said, the move to QPR does, on the face of it at least, appear to be a slightly strange one. Czech keeper Radek Černý is highly thought of at Loftus Road and appears to be the undisputed number one for Jim Magilton’s side, and while the Northern Irish manager has stated that Heaton has been brought in to provide competition, it seems more likely that the Chester-born custodian will, barring unforeseen circumstances, ostensibly be there as cover. He will however link up with an old colleague and familiar face in the form of former United youth goalkeeper coach David Rouse, who now coaches the senior keepers at QPR – it could be that this played a part in both sides agreeing to the move.

This will be Heaton’s fourth spell out on loan, with spells at Swindon Town, Royal Antwerp and – last season – Cardiff City already on his CV. Last season was ultimately a bit of a false dawn for Tom, who initially won the starting role in goal at Ninian Park and made 21 league appearances, only to lose his place to Peter Enckelman due to injury and never really get it back.

As an ‘emergency’ loan signing for three months (or 93 days), Heaton was able to take his place on the bench for yesterday’s draw against Plymouth Argyle despite the late confirmation of the loan switch. It may be that the two clubs now reach agreement on a longer loan deal in the coming days, as happened with Lee Martin at Nottingham Forest last season. Whatever happens, Tom will don the number 22 shirt during his time at Loftus Road, and we wish him all the best.

United’s U18s finished their pre-season campaign with a very comfortable 4-1 victory over Huddersfield Town at Carrington this morning.

Starting on a new pitch for the 2009/10 season, the club had installed three permanent stands which can accommodate approximately 120 supporters. While it was good to get a seat, it did nothing to prevent the weather from giving all the supporters a drenching as the rain was vertical at times.

The game kicked off in sensational fashion with Ravel Morrison giving United a lead in the first minute. Three minutes later Josh King made it 2-0 with a good finish from a right wing cross by Nick Ajose.

United were clearly on top and the Huddersfield defence was all over the place. Once again King’s pace and strength was causing all sorts of problems. He was brought down in the penalty area just before the half-hour mark and Morrison stepped up to place it past the keeper. Then three minutes before half-time, a foul on King again, this time for shirt pulling, led to another penalty. This time Josh took the spotkick, and although the keeper got a hand to the shot, it had too much power and ended in the net.

Hussain and Ngoo had already come on as subs in the first half, replacing the injured Robbie Brady and Will Keane respectively. Paul McGuinness took the opportunity to make one additional change at the break, McGinty coming on for Thorpe.

In the second half, Huddersfield came out much more determined, while we relaxed and weren’t as decisive on the ball or with our passing. In fact, quite a few players were trying things on their own, rather than playing a team game. Morrison in particular was very slack at times.

To be fair, the terrible conditions didn’t help and Huddersfield scored a deserved consolation goal half way through the second period, a reward for a more dogged approach.

We made quite a few substitutions in the last half an hour, and there were few other chances to talk about.

Josh King was easily the best player on the park, while Morrison showed neat touches on occasions. Both Will Keane and Robbie Brady were excellent in the first half an hour before going off with niggles.

Reds quartet get England call-ups

England Under-17 head coach John Peacock has included new first-year scholars Sam Johnstone, Tom Thorpe, Ravel Morrison and Will Keane in his squad for the upcoming FA International Tournament.

The annual four-team tournament will this year feature Portugal, Italy and Turkey, with England as hosts, and gets underway on August 26th. Games will be staged at Notts County’s Meadow Lane, Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium and Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium.

Goalkeeper Johnstone is one of four players retained by Peacock from the squad that took part in the summer’s U17 European finals, but for the trio of Thorpe (a centre-back), Morrison (a winger/attacking midfieler) and Keane (an attacking midfielder/forward) it’s a first call-up at this level. All four United youngsters were part of Kenny Swain’s U16 squad last season, so they’re not strangers to representing their country.

DAN! DAN! – Toon, Terriers take United duo on loan

It’s been relatively quiet on the loan front so far this pre-season, but the temporary exit door at Old Trafford finally saw some activity yesterday, Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town swooping for defender Danny Simpson and midfielder Danny Drinkwater respectively.

Simpson moves to St James’ Park with a point to prove and a United career to fight for. Now 22 and entering the final year of his contract at OT, the Salfordian defender knows that another season like last year’s wash-out on loan with Blackburn will surely spell the end of his time at his boyhood club. Even an impressive stint with the Magpies may not be enough to secure a future with the Reds, with Rafael da Silva looking like the heir to Gary Neville’s right-back position and other youngsters like Ritchie de Laet making a recent impression.

Newcastle have taken Danny on loan until January, hoping he can help shore up a defence that struggled badly in the Premier League last season and looked to still be shaky in last week’s Championship opener against West Brom. Simpson has prior experience of the Championship, having had previous loan spells with Sunderland and Ipswich in the second tier, but Newcastle United and the various crises engulfing that club at present will likely present an entirely different challenge. Simo has taken the number 12 shirt at St James’ and is in line to make his debut in this evening’s home match against Reading, which is live on Sky Sports at 5.20pm.

In contrast, Danny Drinkwater is embarking on his first spell away from the club he has been with since the age of 9. An impressive performer at reserve level last season, going out on loan was always a likely next step considering the depth of talent in midfield at United.

Having just been a part of the England U19 team that made the European Championship final and featured several players already with extensive first-team experience at their respective clubs, another season at reserve level was likely to be something of a come-down for the 19 year-old – the timing is right to seek senior football at a progressive club.

In that respect, Huddersfield appear to be an excellent fit for the 19 year-old. Terriers’ boss Lee Clark is clearly an admirer of the young Mancunian, telling his club’s official site:

“Danny is a midfield player that we have tracked for a long time. We have monitored him playing for Manchester United’s reserve side and England under-19s and we like him very much. He can play in all four positions across midfield and as an attacking player. He is a very good footballer who passes the ball very well and gets into goalscoring positions. I want competition for places all around the pitch, so I’m delighted to have Danny here.”

For his part, Danny is obviously delighted with the move and excited at the prospect of a first taste of senior football at the Galpharm Stadium:

“It has been in my head for the past few months now, if not towards the end of last season too, that I need to play first team football. I know that Huddersfield is a big club. I know a lot about the Stadium, about a few of the players and about the level of ambition and I am happy to be here.

The manager simply expects me to give my all, which I am more than happy to do. There is a fair bit of competition for the midfield positions here and I’m looking forward to that challenge. I want to play as much as possible here and help Huddersfield towards promotion.”

Drinkwater will wear the number 25 over the course of his season-long spell in Yorkshire, and goes straight into the squad for today’s home game against Southampton. We’ll have updates of the progress of both Danny’s throughout the season.

Intriguingly, despite being set to ply their trade in different divisions this season, the two United youngsters could find themselves in direct opposition in the very near future – August 26th sees Newcastle take on Huddersfield in the Carling Cup.

Reds to honour Sir Matt with 100th Anniversary match

A Manchester United XI is set to take on Motherwell in September in a match to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late, great Sir Matt Busby.

The two sides will compete for the Sir Matt Busby Shield at Fir Park Stadium on Sunday September 6th, with the match being organised by North and South Lanarkshire Councils to mark the launch of the Sir Matt Busby Scholarship programme. Said programme will see free coaching education provided to the local community, allowing both adults and children to take the first steps towards emulating Sir Matt, one of Lanarkshire’s favourite sons.

The game falls on a weekend that has been set aside in the fixture calendar for international matches, and while this may mean a lack of household names on show, it will also mean United will be represented by a reserve team full of talented youngsters, in itself a fitting tribute to Sir Matt and his faith in young players. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to take charge of the side for a match that promises to be both a terrific tribute to the Reds’ longest-serving manager and a real competitive test for United’s second string.

Tickets for the Sir Matt Busby Shield are priced at £12 for adults, £6 for juveniles and £20 for a family ticket (1 x adult and 2 x children). International roundup (11/12 August): Tošić at the double; Brandy/Cleverley stake claims for U20 World Cup; trio make U21 debuts

The much-maligned early season international fixtures may frustrate and worry club managers and fans alike, but they do offer a valuable opportunity for a number of young players across the continent and the globe to take the first steps towards establishing themselves in various age-group national teams for the long season ahead. World Cups at senior and youth level, the annual European finals at U19 and U17 level, another round of Euro U21 qualification – it all starts again here, and unsurprisingly there was plenty of United involvement over the past couple of days.

Perhaps the most striking contribution from a United player on the international stage this week (even including established senior internationals) came from Serbia’s Zoran Tošić. Very much a fringe player with the senior squad over the last couple of years, a call-up for last night’s friendly against 2010 World Cup hosts South Africa as part of an injury-hit and somewhat depleted squad offered the 22 year-old an opportunity that it’s fair to say he grasped with both hands.

The first half of the match in Atteridgeville’s Super Stadium was a dour, goalless affair, prompting Serbia coach Javier Clemente to introduce Tošić from the bench at the break, and United’s January signing from Partizan Belgrade had a near-instant impact. Denied what seemed to be a clear penalty less than ten minutes into the half, Tošić picked himself up and minutes later had earned himself a place on the scoresheet, showing great pace and control to latch onto a clever through-ball and surprising strength to hold off Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth before firing past goalkeeper Fernandez and into the far corner.

PSV’s Danko Lazović made it 2-0 soon after with a sublime half-volley before Tošić grabbed the limelight again, recieving the ball on the right flank as Serbia counter-attacked, cutting inside before fooling two defenders by cutting back outside again and finishing expertly with his weaker right foot. Don’t want to rely on my fair-to-middling attempts to describe Zoran’s brace? You can see both goals in the video below:

Katlego Mphela bagged a late consolation for South Africa, but it was Serbia’s – and Tošić’s – night. The United wideman will now surely have forced his way firmly into Clemente’s thinking for upcoming World Cup Qualifiers, and the confidence gleaned from his match-winning display can only help as continues to try and establish himself in the first-team at Old Trafford.

Tošić wasn’t the only United player to score two goals for his country this midweek – hell, two other young Reds did so in the same game. England U20s took on their Montenegrin counterparts in a friendly on Tuesday night at West Bromwich Albion’s The Hawthorns, and Brian Eastick’s side included Tom Cleverley and Febian Brandy, the latter a late call-up to replace another Old Trafford youngster, Danny Welbeck. With September’s FIFA U20 World Cup in Egypt looming large, the onus was on those selected by Eastick to make an impression and cement a place in at least the 30-man preliminary squad for that tournament. The United duo have surely done exactly that.

Cleverley, making a long-awaited first appearance for England at any level, had an early chance to make his mark when Mijodrag bizarrely handled a Jenkins cross to gift England a sixth-minute penalty. The United midfielder, wearing 11, stepped up confidently and there wasn’t much wrong with his kick, but keeper Vladan pulled off a terrific save to frustrate the 19 year-old.

That frustration was eased somewhat however when Cleverley’s club colleague opened the scoring less than ten minutes later. Picking the ball up on the right flank, Brandy laid the ball off to Javan Vidal and continued his run inside to latch onto the right-back’s clever reverse ball, before firing through Vladan’s legs from a tight angle.

Both United youngsters were heavily involved as the Young Lions created a host of chances in the first half, but they had to wait until the stroke of half-time to extend their lead. The second goal was well worth waiting for however, left-back Joe Bennett delivering a great low cross into Brandy’s stride that the Mancunian forward met with the most emphatic of volleys.

The second half continued in much the same fashion, and now it was Cleverley’s turn to come to the goalscoring party on the eve of his 20th birthday. Just three minutes after the interval, the Basingstoke-born youngster played a neat one-two on the left with Brandy before coolly slotting past the helpless Vladan. Tom’s second goal seven minutes from time was scored from much the same position, but involved a terrific piece of skill to lose a defender before curling an unstoppable strike into the bottom corner.

The scoring was rounded off by Bolton’s Tope Obadeyi in injury time, with a helping hand from Cleverley, and a 5-0 win was a fair reflection of England’s dominance, something United’s pair of representatives had a big hand in. Extensive highlights of the game can be seen below:

Both Brandy and Cleverley have done pretty much all they can to earn a place in the squad for the prestigious U20 World Cup. With neither in the Sir Alex Ferguson’s immediate first-team plans you would imagine the Reds’ boss will have no qualms with making the pair available for selection (unlike with other international tournaments, clubs can refuse to release players for this one), and after Tuesday’s performance the chances of selection for both players have to be high, but they’ll be left sweating until the squad is announced in a few weeks time.

Others in international action this midweek include a trio of Under-21 debutants. The most high-profile would have to be Kiko Macheda, who was handed both significant praise and a place in the starting XI for Wednesday’s game against Russia in St Petersburg by Azzurini boss Pierluigi Casiraghi. Macheda, still only 17, teamed up with Mario Balotelli and Alberto Paloschi in attack, and created the first goal of the game for the latter, before being withdrawn at half-time – presumably at Sir Alex Ferguson’s request. Italy went on to lose 3-2.

The other two making their first appearance at U21 level were Ollie Norwood with Northern Ireland and Ritchie de Laet with Belgium. Norwood, so impressive with the NI U20s at last month’s Milk Cup, was a half-time substitute for Steve Beaglehole’s side as they took on Portugal in a tough away friendly, and he joined clubmate Corry Evans on the field. The young Ulstermen went down 2-1 to the hosts, but it was another big step for the English-born Norwood, who has almost been fast-tracked since becoming part of the NI setup.

De Laet meanwhile joined that small band of international footballers to make their U21 debut having already been capped at senior level. The young Belgian appeared in two friendlies for his country in May’s Kirin Cup, but that was very much as part of an experimental squad. With the big names restored to the senior setup, de Laet understandably dropped down to U21 level for Tuesday’s friendly with Finland and acquitted himself well in defence, helping his side to keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw.

In addition to Tošić, another pair of young Reds picked up full caps on Wednesday. It was a night to forget for Darron Gibson, who started the Republic of Ireland’s 3-0 home defeat against Australia, but definitely a night to remember for Mame Biram Diouf, United’s recent signing from Molde, who made his senior debut for Senegal in their 2-1 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo.

United’s second string finished off their tour of Benelux with a dour 0-0 draw against Belgian EXQI League side Royal Antwerp at Bosuil last night. Coming at the end of a lengthy and arduous pre-season programme, it was perhaps inevitable that the Reds wouldn’t be able to produce their best form, and so it proved in a game dominated by the defences and only really illuminated by an effort against the bar by both teams.

The locals had been hoping to see old boy Ritchie de Laet in action, but after his recent success with the United first team, he was called up into the Belgian U-21 squad and did not feature. Similarly, Corry Evans and Oliver Norwood, who were involved in the Overdam Tournament on Saturday, were called up by Northern Ireland. With Febian Brandy still nursing a knock from earlier in the tour, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer flew out new recruits in the shape of Josh King and Ryan Tunnicliffe.

There were warm welcomes for both Warren Joyce and Danny Simpson, with Joyce in particular being feted by the locals after his spell in charge of the Great Old earlier this decade.

The game kicked off with United playing a familiar 4-5-1 formation with Gill and Chester in central defence/ Stewart and Brady supported lone striker Josh King, while a midfield three of James, Eikrem and Hewson were hoping to get an early grip on the game.

It turned out to be a dour contest with little in the way of goal action. The closest either side came to a goal in the first half was on 35 minutes when left fullback Joe Dudgeon sliced a corner onto his own crossbar and the Antwerp No. 8 proceeded to miss a free header from six yards out with the goal at his mercy…..heading over the bar.

The Reds looked slightly jaded in the first period following their exertions over the last week. To be fair, it was a very warm evening and the pitch was incredibly dry and very hard. Solskjaer made one change at the break, Tunnicliffe replacing Brady.

The second half was much the same with little goalmouth action. We had to wait until 55 minutes into the match before United had their one and only chance, a Danny Simpson strike from the edge of the area which hit the crossbar. The game then was played from midfield with neither team looking likely to make a breakthrough. Antwerp made one final push and perhaps should have done better with a free header late in the game. With a few minutes to go, Brown replaced Stewart who looked knackered.

A 0-0 draw was probably a fair result with both teams trying to win the dogfight in midfield and both defences were really on top. Tom Heaton was a virtual spectator for the entire game and Josh King was probably the Man of the Match with a great display of how to lead the line. He was busy, strong and direct all evening showing glimpses of his blistering pace, causing the Antwerp defence all sorts of problems.

In front of a lively crowd of around 5000 it was funny to hear the Antwerp fans singing English songs, even some from the United songbook. The best of the evening however, was when they sang ‘Warren Joyce, take us up, to the place we belong. first division, then into Europe, take us up, Warren Joyce’ to the tune of Country Roads!

The Reds will be pleased with the results and performances during the tour, remaining unbeaten throughout and proving to be a good pre-season workout before the serious business gets underway next week with the Lancashire Senior Cup Final against Bolton Wanderers at the County Ground in Leyland.

More silverware for the Reds as reserves win the Wout van Overdam tournament

Hot on the heels of Paul McGuinness and his academy side bringing the Northern Ireland Milk Cup back to Manchester last weekend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the United second string will also have some silverware amongst the hand luggage when they return from their mini-tour of the Netherlands and Belgium after clinching the Wout van Overdam tournament yesterday in terrific style.

The WVO tournament is held in Pijnacker-Nootdorp, 15 miles or so from the city of Rotterdam, and has typically been contested mainly by teams from Holland and Belgium, but United added an English flavour in what was the fourth hosting of the event. Ole added Ritchie de Laet – fresh from a great performance for the first team at Old Trafford on Wednesday – to the squad that picked up a 4-1 win in Katwijk on Thursday, and that meant kitman Ian Buckingham was handed a squad number…

The Reds were drawn in Pool 1 of the 10-team tournament, along with local side BVCB and Eredivisie teams Vitesse Arnhem, Sparta Rotterdam and NEC Nijmegen. Those teams, as well as the five teams in Pool 2 (Royal Antwerp, Oliveo, De Graafschap, Germinal Beerschot and FC Groningen), played each other in a round robin format throughout Saturday morning and into the afternoon at the Oliveo FCS training complex.

MATCH 1: United 1-0 Vitesse Arnhem (Evans 6)

The tournament got underway at 10.20am for United with a game against Vitesse Arnhem, one of the stronger teams in the tournament. The games are only 35 minutes in duration with no half time, so Solskjaer started what is probably what is his most experienced side.

In a tough, scrappy game, United were soon ahead as Corry Evans gave us the lead after only 6 minutes. From then on the contest was fairly even but we had more of the play and were deserved winners. We played 451 with Brandy up front, watched by a small crowd of 114.

The second game started 15 minutes later and obviously the team had a completely different look, with most of the subs in the first game starting against BVCB, who were much lower quality than Vitesse.

The game was played on the main pitch which is synthetic, and although there are artificial pitches at Carrington it was interesting to see how the Reds would cope with a slightly different game. As it turned out there was no reason to have worried….. Cam Stewart gave United the lead on 7 minutes when he ran on to a through ball by Ajose and placed the ball calmly past the keeper into the bottom left hand corner. Scott Wootton made in 2-0 on 12 minutes when he scored with a glancing header from 12 yards into the top right hand corner from a Stewart corner. A much larger crowd of 327 were delighted when United made it 3-0 on 15 minutes. Stewart was having a good game and ran onto a through ball by Ollie Norwood. He raced towards goal before squaring it to Ajose who calmly slotted it into an empty net.

With the game virtually won, Ian Buckingham came on after the goal for Cam Stewart. Eikrem then missed an open goal from four yards and got into a bit of a slanging match with one of their defenders. He must of said something as he was immediately substituted. Then on 32 minutes the bench went crazy! Hewson was upended in the area and we were awarded a penalty. Up stepped Buckingham who drove the ball hard into the bottom right hand corner giving the keeper no chance. The management and subs were in stitches as Ian turned to celebrate.

The game finished 4-0 to the Reds who lined up again in a 451 formation with Ajose the lone striker. After two games, United looked to be firmly established as one of the favourites to win the competition.

MATCH 3: United 1-1 NEC Nijmegen (de Laet 24)

The hosts Oliveo were in Group 2, and they showed that although they may be a small provincial junior team, their facilities are top division in all respects and their set-up puts many English clubs to shame.

As the tournament was progressing, it became clear that the Dutch teams were using the games to give match time to many of their first team regulars as well as their reserves. As a consequence, the result against an experienced Vitesse team was even more encouraging.

The Reds then faced a very strong NEC side with first team players listed on their team sheet. United lined up in last season’s kit of white shirts and blue shorts. However, Febian Brandy wore the Number 20 shirt as the Number 9 jersey had been ripped to shreds in the match versus Katwijk on Thursday. United had a back four of Simpson, Chester, De Laet and Gill, with Stewart and Dudgeon playing out wide. Hewson, James and Evans were the middle three with Brandy again the lone striker.

Starting on the outside grass pitch, the opening ten minutes saw NEC over-power United in most areas. They were a strong physical side and went ahead early in the game when one of their forwards lobbed Zieler from the edge of the area. After 17 minutes, Eikrem came on to replace Gill and De Laet moved from centre-half to left back. Corry Evans moved from midfield to central defence and Magnus took the central midfield role.

It was a sign of good tactical awareness by Solskjaer and Joyce, as Eikrem started to get a grip on midfield and Evans strengthened the defence. Eikrem nearly scored with his first touch, forcing a great save from the keeper with a free kick. Cam Stewart was again doing well on the right, while Brandy was continually busy up front and pressurising the NEC defence.

Then on 24 minutes, United drew level when Ritchie de Laet scored with a header at the far post from another Eikrem fee-kick. For the remainder of the game it was pretty even with a 1-1 draw being a fair result.

At first I had thought that these games might be a bit of a breeze for the Reds and not much competition. However, it was clearly a very competitive tournament which our next opponents had won for the last two years!

United were now guaranteed to finish in the play-off places, but a win over Sparta Rotterdam was still needed to see us through to the final. Sparta were on the same points and goal difference as United, so a draw between the two sides would have seen top spot in the group and the berth in the final decided by a penalty shootout.

MATCH 4: United 2-0 Sparta Rotterdam (Brandy 26, James 33)

With Robbie Brady injured, United played Joe Dudgeon on the left and the back four were Brown, Chester, de Laet and Simpson. Stewart was again wide right, Evans, James and Eikrem in the middle with Febian up front.

It was a tight opening ten minutes with United not giving anything away and the only shot of note was a 30-yard effort from Corry Evans which was easy for the keeper to collect. It remained fairly even for the first twenty minutes and then United upped the tempo. Sam Hewson replaced Reece Brown so Simpson went to right back, Dudgeon to left back, and Magnus went wide left.

In the 24th minute the 461 crowd saw a clear penalty decision turned down as Brandy went down in the box. Whatever frustration he felt was soon forgotten however as Febian scored a cracking solo goal two minutes later. Receiving the ball from Dudgeon on the edge of the area, he spun past one defender, burst in between another two and slotted the ball under the keeper to give United a deserved lead.

On the half hour mark, Gill came on to replace Stewart and went to outside left with Eikrem switching wings. Then on 33 minutes, Danny Simpson released Magnus on the right and he raced down the wing before knocking a great ball to the far post. Oliver Gill met the ball and headed it back for the on-rushing Matty James to hit it with his left foot. The Sparta keeper made a great save but James scored from the rebound to give United a 2-0 lead.

Brandy and Eikrem were immediately replaced by Ajose and Norwood for the last two minutes. As Brandy was coming off the pitch he was berated in no uncertain terms by Warren Joyce for lashing out at a Sparta defender a few minutes earlier. Brandy received strong words from the referee but no card was shown. If Brandy picked up a booking he would have missed the final, and as our only forward, the coaching staff were not too happy with his impetuousity.

Regardless of his ‘mad moment’, Brandy was easily the Man of the Match, working his socks off and causing the Sparta defence loads of problems.

The game finished 2-0 to the Reds and the final table looked like this:

And so to the final against Dutch Eredivisie side FC Groningen. Groningen have a a proud history of hosting a youth tournament of their own and Manchester United have competed in the Groningen Youth Tournament on many occasions down the years.

Continuing in our white and blue strip, the game took place on the main grass pitch and Solskjaer probably named his strongest line-up. The back four were 2-5 and Hewson was preferred in the middle with Eikrem outside left in the five man midfield. Brandy was the buttress up front. The game kicked off at 15.40 and 795 spectators gathered to see the action.

In the first ten minutes we were on top but showed little penetration. The pattern continued until the 24th minute when Groningen had their best chance of the game. One of their forwards broke through the United defence and struck the ball with venom in the box bringing out an outstanding save from Tom Heaton. The Reds then raced down the other end of the pitch with Eikrem feeding Brandy on the edge of the box. Brandy took one touch, shimmied past a defender who brought him down in the area for a definite penalty. Eikrem stepped up and calmly placed the ball in the bottom left hand corner to give United the lead on 25 minutes.

Groningen had lots of possession in the final ten minutes as we started to tire, but our defence held firm. Gill and Wootton were introduced to help keep our goal intact and we ran the clock down to win the tournament at our first attempt.

Both Eikrem and Stewart had good games and, along with Febian Brandy, were our players of the tournament. After nearly three hours of action, James Chester lifted the tournament trophy at the presentation ceremony.

So we leave Holland on a high note and travel to Belgium where the players are enjoying a day of rest before facing Royal Antwerp on Monday night. The tournament has been a great success with everyone delighted that such a prestigious club as United participated. Jan Reuwijk of the organising committee is hopeful that we will make this a regular occurrence in the years to come.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side got the continental leg of their pre-season campaign off to a winning start last night against Dutch Hoofdklasse side vv Katwijk, recovering from a 1-0 deficit at half-time to ultimately record a comfortable 4-1 victory at De Krom thanks to second-half strikes from Joe Dudgeon, Febian Brandy, Matt James and sub goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who was pressed into action as an emergency centre-forward in the closing stages.

With United planning to attend the Wout van Overdam Tournament in Nootdorm tomorrow and a visit to Antwerp scheduled for Monday, United had tried for weeks to set up a friendly with a local team to continue Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pre-season preparation. After talking to a few clubs, eventually a date was agreed with Dutch Third Division side vv Katwijk and Chairman Ton Berkheij was delighted to welcome the Reds second string to ‘De Krom’.

It was early in Katwijk’s pre-season so it was a good opportunity to test themselves against a strong United team. Katwijk are made up of a group of young players, many released from reknowned Dutch teams such as Feyenoord, Volendam and FC Twente. On a gloriously sunny evening, the ground was well attended by locals, enjoying a few beers and traditional dutch herrings!

The United teamsheet showed a player listed as number 18 who was a complete unknown, but without internet access I was unable to google search Clyde Buckingham at the time.

The game kicked off with United making much of the early play and having most of the possession. However, we showed little threat in front of goal, playing 451 with Brandy alone up front. Both Ajose and Stewart were disappointing on the wings and as a consequence Brandy was isolated. Hewson, Evans and Norwood were tidy in central midfield without really catching the eye, with Ollie Norwood being the pick.

Then half way through the first half Katwijk took the lead much to the delight of the home crowd. Katwijk had a free kick on the right about thirty yards out, and unfortunately Zieler was beaten at his near post to a low drive. It was a shot he should have saved and comes after his mistake at Fylde.

Immediately after the goal, the Katwijk team all took a drinks break….with the whole United team waiting to kick off. It was a funny moment as the Reds weren’t sure how long the ‘drinks break’ would take.

If the goal was supposed to sting United into action……then it was difficult to see anyone play the busy bee! The half came to a conclusion with both teams fairly equal although Katwijk had the all important lead.

Apparently Ole was unhappy with some of our play and made numerous changes at the break with Dudgeon, Eikrem, James, Chester and Brady all coming on.

The new faces made an immediate impact with Joe Dudgeon scoring at the far post within two minutes. Already we had more urgency with Matty James picking up where he left off against Altrincham last Tuesday. He kept the play moving, always finding a red shirt and it seemed to have a more positive impact on Ollie Norwood as they both got a grip on the midfield. On 60 minutes Febian Brandy gave us the lead with a typical poachers goal in the six yard box after a great cross from Danny Simpson.

Chester, who took over the captain’s armband at halftime, was solid in defence and Joe Dudgeon offered a much more attacking threat next to Brady who was probing and forceful in attack. United were now on top and and two minutes after Brandy’s strike, Matty James scored our third with one of the most exquisite chips you will ever see. The home crowd knew they had seen a special goal and gave him a wonderful ovation.

It was at this point that we realised that Brandy was carrying a knock, his shirt almost completely ripped off his back…..he needed to come off. However, with no other outfield players available, up stepped Tom Heaton. Wearing the Number 19 jersey….and a big grin…..he replaced Febian after 72 minutes. Four minutes later, it got better when Heaton scored United’s fourth.

Then the great mystery was solved. United’s Number 18 was not an unknown trialist, but none other than our kitman Ian Buckingham. He came on for Stewart after 81 minutes and had a nice cameo for the last ten minutes or so.

Final Score: VV Katwijk 1 Manchester United 4.

It was a good run out for the Reds and another compelling display from Matty James.

After the game the players and staff spent time winning over the local fans signing autographs for all and sundry. Chairman Ton Berkheij was delighted with both the turnout and the game and is hoping for United to visit again next season, although there is no official tie-up between the clubs.

All in all a good run out and we can now look forward to the Overdam Tournament tomorrow.

Heartbreak for Reds trio as England come up just short

Just as it was for the now departed Fraizer Campbell earlier in the summer, it was a case of so near and yet so far for United’s England U19 trio Danny Welbeck, Danny Drinkwater and Matt James yesterday after the Young Lions fell at the final hurdle of the UEFA U19 European Championships to the hosts Ukraine.

Of course back in June the suspended Campbell had to watch on as England were taken apart 4-0 in the final of the U21 Euros by Germany. Brian Eastick’s Under-19s weren’t beaten quite so emphatically, but Ukraine ultimately ran out convincing winners, never looking like throwing away the 5th minute lead handed to them by Denys Harmash – much less the 2-0 lead they established early in the second half thanks to Dmytro Korkishko’s superb free-kick.

Welbeck and Drinkwater were handed starting berths for the final, but it was an especially frustrating game for the pair of them. Welbeck, arguably England’s most high profile and gifted player, was marginalised by a 4-5-1 system that starved him of service and left him little to do but harass Ukraine defenders. Arguably the one moment of real quality in attack from the Young Lions was orchestrated by the United striker, his clever ball inside the full-back freeing Joe Bennett to cross for Dan Gosling to strike a goalbound effort that was somewhat fortuitously blocked.

Having appeared to have been nursing a shoulder injury picked up in the semi-final win over France, Welbeck’s substitution just after the hour mark was perhaps no surprise, but it can only have added to the sense of frustration for the 18 year-old Mancunian. He joined Drinkwater on the bench, the Reds midfielder having been replaced ten minutes earlier after struggling to make an impact (along with the rest of the England midfield) and seemingly coming close to losing his cool on a couple of occasions, most notably when picking up a caution.

There was some mitigation for England’s defeat in that they had to play an extra half-hour in their semi-final clash with France, and also in that their opponents were much more advanced in terms of fitness due to the earlier start of the Ukrainian league season, but the unavoidable truth is that the hosts were comfortably the better team on the day, and that England failed to play to their potential when it mattered most.

That will have been all the more disappointing for Eastick and his players as, after an unconvincing start to the tournament, they really seemed to be peaking at the right time. The Young Lions had started off the group stage with draws against Switzerland and Ukraine, James and Welbeck starting both while Drinkwater started the latter and came on as a sub in the opener. James stood out in that game against the Swiss, while Welbeck crucially won a penalty in the 2-2 draw with the hosts.

That left England sweating over qualification for the semi-finals, with a win needed in their final group game against Slovenia to progress. As it turned out there was really nothing to be fretting about as they ran out 7-1 winners, a Euro U19 finals record, and Welbeck starred in the first half, playing a part in Henri Lansbury’s opening goal before grabbing two of his own with terrific finishes. As in the previous two games, he was taken off midway through the second half as Eastick sought to protect him from injury, a recent growth spurt having caused a few issues for the forward (including the injury that ruled him out of the Euro U21 finals). Drinkwater and James meanwhile were frustrated onlookers, both having to sit this one out due to injury.

Sadly for James, his injury was one that was to end his tournament at that point, the Bacup-born midfielder being forced to return to Manchester for treatment. The 18 year-old is still a year young for U19 level however and will be desperate to get another chance in next year’s finals. James wasn’t the only United player to have his tournament hopes wrecked by injury of course – goalkeeper Ben Amos had been forced to withdraw from the squad just days before the opening game.

Anyway, the remaining two Reds in the England squad recovered sufficiently to take their place in the starting lineup for what was to be a dramatic semi-final with France, another side who had improved after a shaky start to the tournament. Indeed, it was Les Bleus who made all the early running, Yacine Brahimi instrumental in all their best play and creator of a deserved opening goal for Magaye Gueye after just 8 minutes.

England were in danger of being blown away in that first half, and the United duo struggled to get in the game as England made little headway in an attacking sense. That was until some fairly outrageous good fortune just before the break drew them level. A very harsh freekick was awarded to England right on the edge of the area for handball, and while Drinkwater’s effort with the set piece was poor and cannoned into the wall, Lansbury was on hand to drive home the loose ball from twenty yards and restore parity.

A much more even second half followed, with the decisive moment coming with a little under twenty minutes left when a challenge from Sebastien Corchia on Welbeck brought the young Frenchman a second yellow card. Unfortunately for Welbeck, said challenge came on the back of another hefty clash with France ‘keeper Pillot, and the hobbling United youngster was forced out of the game just as England were poised to seize the advantage.

They ultimately did so, albeit in extra-time, thanks to a well-taken brace from Nathan Delfouneso of Aston Villa, before the French absolutely imploded and incurred two further ridiculous dismissals in the closing stages to leave England playing out time against eight men. While doing so, Drinkwater so nearly bagged himself a goal, his strike crashing against a post with Pillot well beaten. It mattered little though as England ultimately went through comfortably into a final that unfortunately was just a step too far for a weary, depleted squad.

We should also acknowledge at this point the part one other United youngster played in the tournament. Adem Ljajić, the 17 year-old prodigy signed from Partizan Belgrade in January and still plying his club trade in the Serbian capital on loan, was the star man for his national side as they cruised through the group stage, playing a key role in all four of the goals scored by the young Serbs en route to doing so. Sadly, their run came to an end with a below-par showing against the Ukrainians in the other semi-final, but Ljajić’s burgeoning reputation was only added to. He’ll still be eligible for the next two U19 tournaments, but one suspects he will be moving onto bigger and better things in international terms sooner rather than later.

Australia’s cricketers may have escaped with a draw in the third Ashes test yesterday but there was no such luck for captain Ricky Ponting’s adopted football team at Moss Lane this evening, as Altrincham ultimately went down 2-0 to a United reserve side playing a rare away game at their usual home. A bumper crowd of 1772 guaranteed the hosts a useful payday and got to see a closely-contested game between the Blue Square Premier side and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United second string, who just about merited the victory earned by goals from Joe Dudgeon and the unfortunate James Smith, who put through his own net with a minute remaining.

Le Havre lash out as United ‘poach’ Pogba

In a statement on their official website, French Ligue 2 side Le Havre have confirmed that their promising young midfielder Paul Pogba has joined Manchester United, much to their chagrin.

Pogba is rated as one of the most promising young players in France and has captained Les Bleus at U16 level. Of Guinean descent, the physically imposing defensive midfielder – born in March 1993 – follows the likes of Lassana Diarra, Pascal Chimbonda and Charles N’Zogbia through Le Havre’s famed youth development program, and has been tracked by a number of top European clubs for some time. Le Havre believed they had an agreement in place with the 16 year-old and his parents that would see him remain with the north coast club until at least the end of the forthcoming 2009/10 season.

Much to their annoyance that now appears to not be the case, with United appearing to have beaten Arsenal in the race to secure Pogba’s signature, and Les Ciel et Marine have reacted angrily to what they describe as the theft of their young prodigy. The following statement was posted on their official site on Friday:

“Le Havre wishes to express its indignation regarding the dealings of Manchester United’s directors in relation to Paul Pogba.

Paul Pogba, his parents and Le Havre were bound to a contract called a ‘non-solicitation agreement’ from autumn 2006. At the end of that contract, the three parties agreed to sign a trainee contract when the player matched certain age and scholarship criteria, taking him through to the end of the 2009/10 season. The player and his parents have refused to keep to the arrangement because Manchester United have offered very high sums of money to the parents of the (player) with the aim of obtaining the transfer of their son.

This this great European club with its prestigious history has not hesitated to put the player and his parents “in breach of this contract” in order to sign the player at a lower cost. This foolish act is even more unacceptable when it comes from a club of such a scale. At a time when many voices have started to be heard coming out of the EU, governments, FIFA and UEFA against ‘minor slave trade’, Manchester United have not hesitated to uproot a 16-year-old kid!

Le Havre recalls that this is the same club who, a few weeks ago, deigned to give lessons in morality with regard to the sums being paid by certain clubs in the transfer market, and yet are found today to be plundering Le Havre, and French football, of one of its best young players.

Le Havre intends to call on the authorities to denounce such behaviour and to impose heavy sanctions. We intend to put every effort towards ensuring that such incidents are frowned upon by all, and to defend the training of young people, in order to protect the values of our sport.”

For their part, United claim to have done nothing wrong in their acquisition of the player. A Reds spokesman told the BBC: “It is complete nonsense. Everything has been done within Uefa guidelines”. Nonetheless, the club are sure to be on the receiving end of further criticism for ‘poaching’ young European talent, having previously come under fire for the signings of Giuseppe Rossi, Gerard Piqué, Federico Macheda and Davide Petrucci.

As ever in cases like these, which have become increasingly common in recent years, there are mixed feelings as a fan of the recruiting club, a moral dilemma if you will. While there is obvious excitement at the arrival of such a highly-touted young player, and acknowledgement of the circumstances that lead United and other English clubs to seek to acquire players in this manner, there is also understanding of the obvious frustration and anger felt by the club who lose one of their brightest prospects.

UEFA president Michel Platini has been pushing for the introduction of a rule preventing the international transfer of players under the age of 18, and member associations, clubs, leagues and players agreed in principle at a meeting in March this year, but until such a rule is officially passed (which is likely to hinge on the outcome of Ireland’s referendum later this year on the Treaty of Lisbon and it’s clause recognising the specificity of sport) clubs are well within their rights to obtain players in the manner United have acquired Pogba.

English clubs do seem to be at the centre of the overwhelming majority of cases like this, or at the very least it seems that way. A major factor in that is the financial clout of clubs in this country and the money they are prepared to pay to young players (and their families) in comparison to their continental peers, but also worth considering is the frankly ridiculous ‘90 minute’ ruling in England that prevents clubs recruiting players from further afield than ninety minutes travelling time. When you consider that the ninety minute radius for United includes a large swathe of the Irish Sea and North Wales, and that the remainder is shared with other clubs from the North West, Yorkshire and the Midlands, you can see why clubs have tended to look further afield in recent years.

This is obviously of no consolation to the likes of Le Havre, but it goes some way to explaining the so-called ‘pillaging’ of talented youngsters from certain European countries by English clubs, and I guess to easing our collective conscience as fans of English teams. If UEFA are successful in implementing their desired restriction on the international transfer of Under-18 players however, English clubs will go from what currently seems to be a position of strength to being at a significant disadvantage compared to their European rivals – Barcelona and Real Madrid for example are free to scout Spain in its entirety.

United will go head-to-head with Sheffield United in tomorrow’s Northern Ireland Milk Cup final after overcoming Fenerbahce 2-1 in a tense and incident-packed last four clash at the Ballymena Showgrounds. The Turkish side had the better of the opening exchanges and took the lead through Semih, but the game swung in a dramatic two minute spell at the end of the first half that saw Joshua King equalise for the Reds and Fener defender Okan sent off for handball on the line. Skipper Robbie Brady missed the resulting penalty, but went from villain to hero in the second half as he grabbed the crucial winning goal seven minutes from time to send United into their third successive final.

The big boost for Paul McGuinness heading into the game was the return to the side of Joshua King, who had missed all bar eight minutes of the tournament thus far having picked up an injury early on in the Reds’ first game against County Antrim. The big Norwegian forward looked dangerous whenever his teammates got the ball to him in the first half, but that wasn’t often enough for McGuinness’ liking as Fenerbahce dominated proceedings and forced Sam Johnstone into a number of fine saves. There was nothing Johnstone could do in the 26th minute however, when Semih found himself in yards of space at the far post and beat the big keeper with ease.

The Turks unquestionably deserved their lead and pressed forward in pursuit of doubling it, United really struggling to get their flair players into the game (Ravel Morrison the only one seeing enough of the ball to really look like doing something) and relying on the back four and Johnstone to keep them in the game. That all changed though in two crazy minutes right at the end of the first half, two minutes that turned the game absolutely on its head.

First of all, very much against the run of play, a rare quick counter attack from the Reds presented Will Keane with the chance to level the scores, and while Aykut in the Fener goal made a great stop from the #10, he couldn’t prevent the #9 King following up to head into the empty net. The United players and staff must not have been able to believe their luck and going in at half-time on level terms would have been a huge boost to those in red, but just a minute after the restart and now deep into stoppage time, a chance to take a remarkable half-time lead presented itself.

Keane again was involved, this time reacting first to a loose ball in the Fenerbahce penalty area after Zeki Fryers’s header from a corner had cannoned off the crossbar. The 16 year-old’s shot was all set to cross the line when Okan stuck out a despairing arm, and with the referee well-placed, a United penalty and red card for Okan was the only option. Unfortunately for the Reds, the dream turnaround didn’t quite materialise as Brady spurned the chance to add to his four goals in the tournament so far, firing his spotkick against the bar and away to safety. The half-time whistle was immediately blown and Brady looked inconsolable as the players disappeared down the tunnel for the interval.

Nevertheless, McGuinness will surely have stressed that United were in a much better position than they had been a couple of minutes before the break, and no doubt urged them to capitalise. It was obvious from a very early stage in the second 35 minutes that the Turkish side were going to be more than content to sit back, try and keep United out and either grab a goal on the break or take the tie to penalties, and in fairness they did their job well, the defending champions getting frustrated as their efforts to break down the ten men repeatedly came to nothing.

The frustration saw some tasty tackles fly in, none more so than one from Morrison which was more over-eagerness to make up for a poor touch than anything malicious, but could easily have brought him a second red card of the week. As it was, the referee showed leniency and only flashed a yellow card, but that in itself was enough to rule Morrison out of tomorrow’s game, his second booking in as many days.

That may have been something of a low point for United but it also seemed to finally spark the team into life, and minutes later, just as the game seemed to be destined for a penalty shootout, the Reds made the decisive breakthrough and Brady redeemed himself. Picking the ball up in his usual left wing position, the Irishman moved forward and blasted a dipping shot past Aykut with the help of a slight deflection. His celebrations showed exactly how much it meant to him to get the winner and to atone for his earlier penalty miss.

Fenerbahce heads dropped a bit then, and although they gamely pushed forward to try and get back in it, they only really succeeded in presenting United with chances to really kill the game off, the most clear-cut falling to Michael Ngoo, whose point blank header from six yards out was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Aykut. Ngoo really should have buried it, but it wasn’t to matter as, after a slightly nerve-jangling five minutes of stoppage time, the referee blew the whistle and confirmed the Reds’ place in the final.

United now have the chance to make Milk Cup history when they take on Sheffield United in tomorrow’s final at the Coleraine Showgrounds. McGuinness’ group can become the first team to both win the Premier section four times and to win it in consecutive years, but they will face stiff competition from a Blades team who always give the Reds a tough game in the Premier Academy League. Kick-off is at 8.15pm, right after the Elite section final which will feature Corry Evans, Conor Devlin and Ollie Norwood in action for Northern Ireland. Both games are live on BBC 2 Northern Ireland, via the red button or on the BBC’s Milk Cup microsite.

Milk Cup 2009: Reds hold their nerve to dispatch Desportivo on penalties

It was nailbiting stuff on the north coast this evening as United’s Milk Cup hopes were kept alive with a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Desportivo Brasil at the Limavady Showgrounds. After a hard-fought seventy minutes that saw the deadlock remain unbroken, centre-half Sean McGinty struck the winning spot-kick to send the Reds into the semi-finals.

What to say about the game itself? Very little unfortunately, with it sadly not being shown live nor covered in the daily highlights roundup. A real battle was forecast against this impressive Desportivo side though, and that appears to have been how things panned out, the Reds’ rearguard holding firm but the attack, bolstered by the return from suspension of Ravel Morrison, unable to make the decisive breakthrough.

The penalty shootout appears to have been a similarly even affair, both teams finding the target with their first five kicks (Ryan Tunnicliffe, Will Keane, Robbie Brady, Michael Ngoo and Larnell Cole for United) to take the game into sudden death. Sam Johnstone then made the decisive save from the sixth Desportivo spotkick, allowing McGinty to step up and clinch victory before being mobbed by his ecstatic teammates.

United now advance into the semis, and things do not get any easier – Fenerbahce lie in wait in Ballymena tomorrow (kick-off 6pm), and the Turkish side have arguably been the most impressive team in the Premier section so far, bagging ten goals in their three matches without conceding any themselves. Their progress into the semi-final was decidedly more straightforward, Irish side Cherry Orchard having put up scant resistance in a 5-0 romp for the Istanbul club.

As with Monday’s opening game, tomorrow’s semi-final (and indeed the second semi involving Porto and Sheffield United) will be shown live on BBCi (online and via red button) thanks to the BBC Blast initiative.

They now take on Denmark in Friday’s final in Coleraine, a game that will take place immediately before the Premier section final at the same venue. Both games will be live on BBC2 Northern Ireland.

Milk Cup 2009: Reds crush Cantolao to move into quarters

Skipper Robbie Brady bagged another brace as United put Peruvian side Cantolao to the sword in a terrific display of free-flowing attacking football in Coleraine this evening, taking his tally for the tournament to four in two games. Will Keane and Ryan Tunnicliffe were also on the mark as the Reds rained shots on the Cantolao goal, with only a great display from ‘keeper Patricio Musso Savage keeping the scoreline respectable.

As you’d expect, the South Americans were a talented side in their own right, but they made the fatal mistake of giving their opponents plenty of space and time on the ball, and United took full advantage. The game wasn’t even five minutes old when the breakthrough came for the defending champions, and it came from the left boot of Monday’s two-goal hero Brady. The 17 year-old Irishman picked up where he left off, curling a brilliant freekick in off the near post that Savage did well to get fingertips to but couldn’t keep out.

Further goals could and should have followed as United showed no signs of missing the injured Josh King and the suspended Ravel Morrison, with Will Keane, Michael Ngoo and Ryan Tunnicliffe all going close as McGuinness’ side sought to get a decisive lead. Eight minutes before half-time that wish was granted, with Tunnicliffe netting from close range after a well-timed run into the box.

If United’s football had been impressive in the first half, things went up a notch at the start of the second, with Will Keane finishing off a team goal of the highest quality to effectively sew up the three points. The move lasted fifteen passes in its entirety, and the movement and one-touch passing from Hussain through Brady, Fryers, Ngoo, Fryers, Ngoo, Fryers, Brady and back to Hussain to lay on the simple finish for Keane was sensationally good football.

The game well and truly won, McGuinness shuffled his pack and gave James Wren, Jesse Lingard, Rico Gomes and Luke Giverin some time on the field. Even at a relative canter United were still creating plenty of chances, Hussain and Keane both going close before Brady capped things off with another great strike five minutes from time. Picking the ball up from Giverin on the left flank, the young Dubliner produced a mazy run across the face of the penalty area, played a clever one-two with Larnell Cole and rifled a right-footed effort back across goal into the far corner. Four goals in two games, the sort of form Brady has previously exhibited in friendly matches but has yet to translate to competitive academy football – hopefully that will all change this season.

The Reds now advance into the quarter-finals, and have been handed one of the toughest possible draws – Desportivo Brasil, who of course have an official affiliation with United. Desportivo also won both qualifying games in convincing fashion and have impressed observers so far this week, so tomorrow’s game at the Limavady Showgrounds is likely to be a real challenge for McGuinness’ young charges. Kick-off is at 7pm.

Milk Cup 2009: Winning start comes at a cost

Robbie Brady’s first-half double and a fantastic late strike from Will Keane saw United get their Milk Cup defence up and running with a 3-0 win over County Antrim this evening, but boss Paul McGuinness was left counting the cost of a niggly and bruising encounter that could see him deprived of two of his key players for tomorrow’s clash with Club Cantolao of Peru.

The match, and indeed the tournament, got off to an inauspicious start for McGuinness’ side when Joshua King was forced to hobble off injured inside the first ten minutes, the Norwegian having been caught late by a poor tackle from Antrim captain Shearer. The promising John Cofie replaced him, but King had looked to be in good form in his pre-season outings for the reserves and losing him, potentially for the whole tournament, was a real blow.

Understandably the Reds took some time to settle after that, a bobbly pitch at the Ballymena Showgrounds not helping them find their rhythm at all. The niggly, physical nature of the opposition contributed to that too, and it would be fair to see there were a few nerves involved as well. Happily for United, those nerves were eased after 23 minutes when they took the lead from the penalty spot, skipper Brady picking himself up after being clumsily fouled to coolly send the goalkeeper the wrong way.

The Reds’ own keeper Sam Johnstone had to be at his best to prevent an immediate reply, plunging to his left to deny Antrim’s #1 at full stretch with a terrific save after the United rearguard had been exposed on the counter attack. Soon after however, the defending champions had some breathing space, Brady bursting into the area before firing home a fine strike to double his tally and his team’s lead.

2-0 and half an hour gone – things looked comfortable, but a moment of madness changed all that on the stroke of half-time. Tempers had been frayed for much of the half, the United players not happy with some of the tackles coming in from their opponents, understandably so it has to be said. Nonetheless, dealing with that sort of treatment is part and parcel of playing for Manchester United, and something Ravel Morrison will have to learn to do. On the recieving end of another late challenge, the 16 year-old squared up to his assailant and hands were raised. No real contact was made but there could sadly be no real complaints when the red card was shown.

Down to ten men, a tricky second half looked to be on the cards, but that never quite materialised. Antrim remained combative and worked hard but never really made their numerical advantage count – indeed, you would have been hard pushed to tell which team was a man short without going to the effort of counting. The Reds’ central midfield duo of Ryan Tunnicliffe and Etzaz Hussain grew into the game and the extra class in the United side told as they ran the clock down with relative ease, and even came up with a final flourish from the boot of Will Keane, whose last minute strike from 20 yards bore more than a slight resemblance to Michael Carrick’s second goal against Roma in that famous 7-1 win in 2007 – a wonderfully pure strike of the football.

All in all then, perhaps not the free-flowing, confident display that may have been expected from the United youngsters, but they got the job done, looked to be finding their feet second half and will be much the better for this test. They now move on to tomorrow’s decisive clash with Club Cantalao of Peru at the Coleraine Showgrounds minus the suspended Morrison and quite possibly the injured King, with Michael Ngoo and Larnell Cole – replacements today – candidates to step in. A win will see them safely through into the quarter-finals.

It was a good day for the other contingent of United starlets at the Milk Cup too, as Northern Ireland trio Conor Devlin, Corry Evans and Oliver Norwood all started in a superb 3-2 victory over Germany in the Elite section. The Germany side may have been largely made up of U17s (as opposed to the U20 NI squad), but when you consider that that U17 side were crowned European Champions in May, it’s still a fine result for Steve Beaglehole’s team, who play Bulgaria in their second match on Wednesday.

A very decent crowd of 7,480 turned out to see Luton Town’s first team entertain Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United reserves at Kenilworth Road this evening, the Reds looking to continue an impressive start to pre-season that has seen them records wins over AFC Fylde and Rochdale and a draw with Norwich City so far. A terrific start from a depleted United XI rocked Mick Harford’s Hatters, with Febian Brandy and Tom Cleverley finding the net inside the first ten minutes to establish an early 2-0 lead, but Town centre-half Asa Hall hauled his side back into the game after quarter of an hour. A much more even contest followed and Luton’s extra experience and strength posed plenty of problems, but the United youngsters ultimately held on to pick up another creditable victory.

It was the usual suspects on the United teamsheet with one or two slight changes – Ron-Robert Zieler lined up in goal with Chester and de Laet in the middle. They were flanked by fullbacks Simpson and Gill and it must have been good for Simmo to return to a more familiar role after operating in midfield last Saturday against Norwich. Febian Brandy returned from injury so the Reds played a familiar 4:5:1 formation with Dudgeon wide on the left and anyone of Eikrem, Gray and Cleverley working down the right when they felt like it. Craig Cathcart was missing, having joined up with the first team squad in Germany.

The Reserves stayed in Norwich last Saturday night and travelled down to London on Sunday making the short journey north this morning. Whatever R&R they had certainly paid dividends as United took the lead within 45 seconds. Good work on the left by Gill and Dudgeon saw the ball find Cleverley who played a nice through ball into the path of Brandy and he slotted it past the keeper from a tight angle.

Eight minutes later United went 2-0 up when Brandy was upended in the box by Pilkington and Cleverley – taking on penalty duties after Hewson missed against Norwich on Saturday – calmly converted from the spot. Up to this point Luton had stood off the young Reds and quickly realised that if they let us play football they would be in for a mauling.

As a consequence, the Luton players – all very tall and physically strong – started to intimidate us with some very hefty tackles that saw de Laet, Cleverley and Gray all needing treatment. Their tactics paid off and they began to get more into the game. Not long after a great ball across the box by Gray was met on the half volley by Brandy and the keeper made an unbelievable save from point blank range. If this was a Premiership game then Sky Sports would be raving about it.

However, Luton promptly went up the other end and won a corner. Eikrem made a poor clearance and the Hatters pulled a goal back through Hall, although there were huge protests of offside from all the United players as he poked home Burgess’ cross-shot. Certainly from our postion behind the goal it looked offside. Nevertheless, Luton were back in the game and at half time the score remained 2-1 to United with both teams sharing equal possession.

The second half was a different story. Stewart came on for Brandy at the break and went on to the right wing. We seemed very toothless with Stewart up front on Saturday, so Solskjaer moved David Gray up front. Luton started to dominate for long periods and the United defence had to hold firm. We had a few half chances, mainly through Gray and Hewson while they also had a couple of chances cleared towards the end.

Both teams made numerous substitutions in the second half, and when Moffatt came on for Hewson, David Gray moved back into midfield.

I suppose a draw would have been a fair result, but those two early goals made all the difference.

De Laet had a good game once again but for me David Gray was Man of the Match.

Northern Ireland Milk Cup 2009: A Preview

Tomorrow marks the start of the 2009 edition of the Northern Ireland Milk Cup, with United’s U17s bidding to defend the Premier section trophy they won so impressively last season and a trio of Reds representing Northern Ireland as they bid for glory in the Elite section. Read on for all the details about the forthcoming five days of action…

First of all, some background info – forgive me for re-using what I wrote this time last year, but it’s as relevant today as it was then! For those unfamiliar with the competition, the Milk Cup is one of the most prestigious youth tournaments in world football, regularly attracting representation from the very biggest clubs in the game since its inception in 1983. The tournament features three age groups – Elite (U19, typically national sides), Premier (U17) and Junior (U15) – and takes place over five days in the Coleraine area of County Londonderry.

Past winners include United, Barcelona, Liverpool, Fluminense and Rangers, while players to have featured in the past include our own Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney. There were 30 players at the 2002 World Cup who had played in the Milk Cup earlier in their career, which kinda says it all.

United will be participating in the Premier section this year, as has typically been the case in previous years. The Reds have won the section three times – most recently last year with a team including Kiko Macheda, Davide Petrucci, Matt James et al, but also in 2003 and in 1991, the latter with a side comprising names like Scholes, Beckham, Giggs and Neville.

The Premier section sees 10 randomly drawn ties involving all 20 sides on each of the first two days. After these two qualifying games each, the 20 sides are split into the top 8 (who go on to play for the Milk Cup), the middle 8 (who will play for the Slemish Trophy) and the bottom 4 (who will play for the Dunluce Trophy) using a standard points system (3 for a win, 1 for a draw) and then a number of tie-breakers if necessary. The three separate tournaments then progress in a knockout format, with quarter-finals, semi-finals and then finals over the next three days, except for the Dunluce Trophy, which – due to the presence of only 20 teams this year rather than the usual 24 – will instead be decided with a three-day round robin competition.

Still with me? Good. A few more details to be aware of… Matches are 70 minutes long, 35 minutes each way (except for the ‘place’ matches which, excluding the final, are 30+30). Each competing team can name a maximum of 18 players in their squad, and coaches have the option of using up to five substitutes in each game. Right, onto the specifics. Theoretically United’s main competition for the trophy looks likely to come from the likes of FC Porto, Fenerbahce and last year’s beaten finalists South Coast Bayern, as well as the usual collection of unknown quantities and dark horses. Before the Reds can start thinking about battling it out for the big prize however, they need to get through the first two days of qualifying games. As you can see, United’s two opponents couldn’t be much more different, with local opposition in the form of County Antrim on day one before a real step into the unknown against Club Cantolao of Peru on Tuesday. One other name to maybe keep an eye on is Desportivo Brasil, who became affiliated with United’s academy late last year.

Media coverage of the tournament has been continually improved over the past few years, and 2009 is no different. In addition to extensive coverage on the official tournament website, daily highlights shows on BBCi (both online and via the red button) and live coverage of the final on BBCi and BBC Northern Ireland, this year sees all games played at the Ballymena Showgrounds being shown live thanks to BBC NI’s ‘Blast’ initiative, which sees 13 to 19 year-olds getting involved in the creation and production of programmes. The great part about that of course is that United’s opening game against County Antrim takes place in Ballymena, so live coverage of that game will be available on both the official Milk Cup website and the BBC Blast website. One quarter-final and both semi-finals will also be shown, so if the Reds progress as hoped, fans will get unprecedented access to the team’s matches.

So all that’s left is to discuss is the players tasked with repeating the feats of last year. All participating players must have been born on or after January 1st 1992, and with academy football in England operating with a similar ‘year group’ system to our schools, this means that the strength of United squad can differ from year to year depending on when the second-year scholars’ birthdays fall in the year. Last year, the likes of Macheda, James, Norwood, Stewart, Curran and Brandao all had ‘late’ birthdays and thus gave the squad a very strong look, but this year only two of the second-years – Robbie Brady and Joshua King – are eligible, which means a much younger squad for Paul McGuinness to take to Northern Ireland.

That said, the provisional squad of 18 still has a strong look to it, with Brady and King being joined by almost all of this year’s intake of first years (including Ryan Tunnicliffe and Zeki Fryers, both – along with Brady and King – part of last year’s squad), as well as a few less familiar names. As said, that squad is subject to change, and there is some talk that Alberto Massacci, the new signing from Empoli, is out there with the squad, which may suggest he has been called up as a late replacement for one of the names listed above. Fellow new recruit Sean McGinty will definitely be one to look out for, the highly-rated centre-half having joined from Charlton Athletic earlier this month. The more unfamiliar names in that list will be Rico Gomes, who is an Under-16 player originally from Portugal, and James Wren and Michael Ngoo, who are on trial from Walsall and Southend United respectively, the latter being particularly highly-rated.

As for a possible starting XI, it would seem likely that those numbered 1-11 will be given the nod initially, with centre-halves McGinty and Thorpe flanked by Michael Keane and Fryers in defence, Tunnicliffe (a possible captain?) and Hussain anchoring the midfield with Morrison and Brady out wide, and Will Keane playing off Joshua King in attack. With five subs allowed per match however, there are plenty of options available to McGuinness and we can expect to see that team chop and change as we move through the tournament.

While the main focus of United fans will obviously be on the Premier section, there’s significant interest in the Elite section as well, with defending champions and hosts Northern Ireland including three United starlets in their squad. Corry Evans, now a full international of course, is likely to skipper a squad that will also include Oliver Norwood and Conor Devlin. They kick off their campaign against a strong Germany side on Monday night before taking on Bulgaria in their second game on Wednesday.

Today was a day of contract resolution – and things only went half United’s way. Sir Alex Ferguson’s delight at Darron Gibson putting pen to paper on a new three-year contract was tempered by the news that Richard Eckersley had turned down the club’s offer of a new deal and instead exercised his right to move, as a free agent, to Premier League new boys Burnley.

United will be entitled to compensation for the loss of the Salford-born right-back as he is under the age of 24 – this is likely to be decided at a tribunal, with the two clubs valuations of the defender thought to differ by a sum in excess of £1m – but that will be of little consolation to Ferguson, who was said to be furious at losing the player.

Eckersley had been offered a two-year extension at Old Trafford, with the first season likely to be spent on loan at Queens Park Rangers, but when that loan switch fell through due to differences over where the 20 year-old would play, he was left with a big decision to make – sign the new deal, hope for another attractive loan proposition to come along but run the risk of potentially another season of reserve football, or act upon the serious interest from Burnley boss Owen Coyle and make the break from his boyhood club.

While the initial temptation in instances like this is to bemoan the player’s lack of patience and wonder how they could walk out on the club they love, there are a number of reasons why this move must have made sense to Eckersley. First and foremost is the competition for his favoured right-back position at United, with Wes Brown, John O’Shea, Gary Neville and Rafael da Silva all ahead of him in the pecking order. Second is the presence of the last name in that list in particular, with the exciting Brazilian, 16 months Eckersley’s junior, seemingly destined for great things and pencilled in as the long-term occupant of the right-back slot and heir to the number 2 shirt.

The third and final reason is something Eckersley alluded too in his first interview with Burnley’s official site – the experience of his elder brother Adam, who came through the ranks in similar fashion but left in January 2008.

“I’d been at United since I was nine, so it was a really hard decision to leave, but my family advised me.

“My brother was at United so I learnt from him and the mistakes he possibly made. It was tough, but I think I’ve done the right thing.”

Richard Eckersley - Burnley-bound

Adam made just the one appearance for the United first team in late 2005 before spending most of the next two years on loan at Royal Antwerp, Brondby, Barnsley and Port Vale, eventually joining the latter club permanently 18 months ago due to, in his own words, being “sick and tired of waiting around, not getting an opportunity to play”. It seems quite likely that his younger sibling feared a similar spell on the loan merry-go-round and, when offered an opportunity with a Premier League side, took the plunge.

A combative, attacking right-back comfortable on the other flank and also capable of doing a job in the centre of defence, Eckersley made four appearances for the first team last season, all as substitute, with his debut coming in the FA Cup Fourth Round tie with Tottenham, where he replaced Fábio da Silva. He also picked up a League Cup winners’ medal as an unused substitute in March’s final against the same opposition.

Richard picked up further winners’ medals in the Champions Youth Cup (2007), Manchester Senior Cup (twice, 2008 and 2009) and Lancashire Senior Cup (2008), as well as an FA Youth Cup runners-up medal in 2007. In addition he made a total of fifty competitive reserve appearances – picking up the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award in 2007/08 – and a further 29 for the academy.

Richard has signed a four-year deal at Turf Moor and is likely to compete with fellow new recruit Tyrone Mears for playing time at right-back this season. While sharing Sir Alex’s disappointment at seeing him leave, we at United Youth obviously wish him all the best.

While the news of Eckersley’s departure came as something of a surprise, Darron Gibson committing himself to the club always seemed to be a likely outcome, with neither side seemingly being in any hurry to rush proceedings despite the Irishman being a free agent and attracting interest from other Premier League clubs. The 21 year-old made 14 first team appearances last term in something of a breakthrough campaign, and his inclusion in the travelling party for the upcoming pre-season tour of Asia illustrates the high regard he is held in by the coaching staff at Old Trafford.

With Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes another year older and doubts persisting over the fitness of Owen Hargreaves and the development of Anderson, 2009/10 offers Gibson a real chance to further establish himself as a serious option in the United engine room, and a new three-year pact on improved terms can only bolster his confidence as he bids to do so.

A Ritchie de Laet equaliser five minutes from time handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side a deserved share of the spoils at Carrow Road this afternoon, as a somewhat makeshift United XI bounced back from an early Norwich goal and a first-half penalty miss to outplay their League One opposition in the second forty-five minutes.

Canaries midfielder Tom Adeyemi gave the home side just reward for an impressive first twenty minutes with a great strike from outside the area, and debutant goalkeeper Ben Alnwick – a loan signing from Tottenham – gave Bryan Gunn’s team another boost when he plunged to his left to turn away Sam Hewson’s spot-kick ten minutes before the break. The Reds adjusted better to the inevitable second-half changes however, and went close on a number of occasions before the unlikely figure of de Laet got in behind the City backline to slot home a late leveller.

From Manchester to Miramar

In one of the more unusual moves of the summer, James Derbyshire has joined New Zealand side Miramar Rangers after his release by United last month. The Warrington-born 19 year-old is now Wellington-bound…

The versatile teenager was let go by the Reds this summer after ten years with the club, the last three of those as a full-time scholar. Originally a central midfielder, Derbyshire struggled to establish himself in his favoured position for the U18s and reserves, instead regularly finding himself deployed in a wider role or in either full-back position. He made 23 appearances for Paul McGuinness’ side in 2006/07, his first year as a scholar, but his playing time declined the following year and last term slumped further, with the former England schoolboy international making just seven reserve starts.

With that in mind, it always looked likely that Derbyshire would be moving on this summer, but few would have predicted the next step in his career. While other released players like Anton Bryan, Kenny Strickland and Chris Curran are still on the hunt for new clubs, James has grasped the opportunity presented to him by the Professional Footballers’ Association of relaunching his career on the other side of the world.

“When the English PFA contacted me about this, it was an opportunity I couldn’t really say no to,” Derbyshire told New Zealand paper The Dominion Post. “I thought it would be fantastic for me, experiencing a different type of football in a different country. I’m excited.”

Miramar Rangers compete in New Zealand’s Central Premier League, one of four regional leagues than run throughout the Kiwi winter (our summer), and are based in the suburbs of the capital city Wellington. They are one of twenty clubs that are represented in the New Zealand Football Championship – the main national league (held in the Kiwi summer) – by Team Wellington, who also have an affiliation with Wellington Phoenix, who play in Australia’s A-League.

This throws up the intriguing prospect for Derbyshire of playing in that competition, with Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata acknowledging there’ll be in an interest in how the English youngster fares: “A kid at that age and on our doorstep, we’ll be having a look at him.”

Derbyshire isn’t looking that far ahead though, his focus solely being on adapting as quickly as possible to his new surroundings and performing for his new side, for whom he is expected to make his debut against Napier tomorrow. “I’m just seeing how things go,” he insisted. “I don’t want to think about (playing for the Phoenix) just yet. I just want to do my job with Miramar Rangers for now.”

A rain-lashed Kellamergh Park was the setting this evening as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve side made their 2009/2010 bow against Unibond League Division One side AFC Fylde, United eventually overcoming both the conditions and committed opposition to get their campaign underway with a 2-1 win. Goals from midfielders Tom Cleverley and Sam Hewson either side of half-time were enough to hand the Reds a victory that their dominant performance deserved, although the home side sent the majority of the record crowd home happy after grabbing a late consolation through Michael Clark.
